About
Aesthetics of Repetition and Extension, Boléro
French composer, Maurice Ravel's Boléro, creates a sense of catharsis from the elongating of an identical rhythm, while Russian composer, Igor Stravinsky's 'The Rite of Spring', harmoniously synchronizes unpredictable, varied beats and sounds together, turning conventional wisdom on its head and opening up a new horizon for contemporary music. Meet the two glorious classic pieces in the history of music for an illuminating dance performance, interpreted by the Korea National Contemporary Dance Company(KNCDC).
2017 & 2018s’ most anticipated KNCDC performance
Bridging of two dance choreography worlds, Kim Boram & Ahn Sungsoo
The constructs of Kim Boram's Boléro and Ahn Sungsoo's 'The Rite of Spring', unite on a single stage for a fascinating collaboration of the two choreographical gurus. Kim captures detailed yet desperate body movements manifested through the reassembling of crafted rhythms and melody melded into 'Boléro', while the choreographer Ahn depicts more instinctive movements fitting flawlessly into the explosive musical piece grounded in his very own, unique musical intuition. The two choreographers' performances are set to meet one another upon center stage.
THOROUGHLY DESPERATELY
Choreography Kim Boram
With the movement of a single dancer, a silent 'Boléro' begins. On the empty stage await a musical ensemble of ten on one side and a group of dancers on the other, standing as if confronting each other. Arranger Park Yongbin reinterprets Ravel's 'Boléro' with a small ensemble, fully exploring the possibilities of musical tone unique to this new arrangement. Choreographer Kim Boram translates the beats and intervals of Park’s music into movement.
The Rite of Spring
Choreography Ahn Sungsoo
A much-talked-about performance heating up the dance world in 2018, featured the primitive reinterpretation of Ahn, best known for his masterful approach to the recreation of 'The Rite of Spring'. The powerful music is comprised of discord and contradiction that mingles amid the full-bodied dance choreography, provoking the natural-born, untamed nature of the audience. Based on the contrarian interpretation where a priestess takes a healthy male as a sacrificial offering, the instinctive energy and sophisticated dancing steps are conjured to such a explosive degree, proclaiming the birth of a new masterpiece in 'The Rite of Spring'.
